Actual gender of a person or an animal as opposed to the grammatical gender. In German, natural gender and grammatical gender do not always conincide. E.g. the grammatical gender of "Mädchen" is neuter though the natural gender is feminine. The agreement with other elements of the sentence is not governed by the natural gender, but by the grammatical gender of a noun: "das Mädchen uns seine (not: ihre) Eltern".
