Capacity of a word to combine with a specific number and type of complements. E.g. the verb "schenken" requires a subject (the giver), an accusative object (the gift) and a dative object (the recipient). Valency is a capacity primarily of verbs, but also of certain adjectives (e.g. jemandem böse sein) and some nouns (e.g. die Hoffnung auf etwas).
