Demonstrative pronouns and determiners

The demonstrative pronouns and determiners are divided into the following classes:

der, die, das
dieser, jener
selbst, selber
derlei, dergleichen

Demonstrative pronouns are used to express a strong reference to a person, a thing, a fact. They are either an determiner of a noun or a substitute for a noun.

They refer anaphorically to something mentioned before, or cataphorically to something that will be said in what follows:

anaphoric (backward) reference:
Wer ist der Mann? Den habe ich hier noch nie gesehen.

cataphoric (forward) reference:
Wir laden diejenigen  ein, die wir gut mögen.
