Relative pronouns, interrogative pronouns and interrogative determiners

Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses. The most frequent relative pronouns are der, die, das.

The other relative pronouns, welcher, wer, and was, can also introduce interrogative sentences. They are then called interrogative pronouns. Welcher is also used as an interrogative determiner.

The fixed expression was für ein is also to be treated as an interrogative pronoun and determiner.

der, das, die
welcher, welche, welches
wer, was
was für ein
