The suffix (e)rig

 
 
The suffix erig is much less frequently used than its variant ig. In many cases, the adjectives formed with erig have also a form derived with rig (see examples).

Features:
  • Umlaut:
    If possible, the stem is usually umlauted:
    Blatt + (e)rig = blätterig
    blättrig
    Loch löcherig
    löchrig
  • en-deletion:
    When a noun ends in en (unstressed), the ending en is deleted:
    Klumpen + (e)rig = klümperig
    klümprig
    Knochen knöcherig
    knöchrig
  • Combined derivation
    erig also forms adjectives from combinations of an adjective or number and a noun:
    drei + Rad + (e)rig = dreiräderig
    dreirädrig
    klein Blatt kleinblätterig
    kleinblättrig
    zart Glied zartgliederig
    zartgliedrig
