The suffix iner

The suffix iner forms masculine nouns that belong to the inflection class s/-. The nouns denote male persons. They are usually derived from geographic or person names.

  • Deletion of the ending:
    When a noun ends in a, o, (i)en (unstressed), the ending is deleted:
    Alexandrien + iner = Alexandriner
    Montenegro Montenegriner
  • Foreign stem variations:
    Often, foreign stem variations can be observed:
    Florenz + iner = Florentiner
    Menorca Menorquiner
