Verb to noun: Combined derivation

Combined derivation is a special type of verb-to-noun derivation. It consists of simultaneous prefixation and suffixation or simultaneous prefixation and conversion.

The nouns formed by this type of combined derivation often denote a continual repetition of the action expressed by the base verb (e.g. Gefrage, Gehuste). They sometimes denote the result of the verb action (Gebäck) or the instrument used to perform the verb action (Gebläse).

The only affixes used for this type of derivation are the prefix ge and the suffix e (rarely sel). Some derived nouns are used both with and without the suffix e (e.g. Geschwätze and Geschwätz).

Prefixation and suffixation

The nouns derived from verbs by combined prefixation and suffixation are neuter. They belong to the inflection class s/-.
