Features:
  • Umlaut:
    A stressed vowel a, o or u in the stem is usually umlauted:
    Eifersucht + el = eifersüchteln
    Fuß füßeln
    Kunst künsteln
  • Deletion of e and en:
    When the noun stem ends in e or en (unstressed), the ending is deleted:
    Schlange + el = Schlängeln
    Brocken bröckeln
    Haufen häufeln

Adjective to verb

The suffix el(n) is rarely added to adjectives.

blöd + el = blödeln
geistreich geistreicheln

Features:
  • Umlaut:
    A stressed vowel a, o or u in the stem is usually umlauted:
    fromm + el = frömmeln
    klug klügeln
    zart zärteln

Verb to verb

When it is added to a verb, the suffix el(n) has usually a diminutive meaning:

brummen + el = brummeln
drängen drängeln
streichen streicheln
