Noun compounds can be formed by combining two nouns with each other and at the same time inserting the linking element en between them.

  • Deletion of the e of the stem:
    When the first noun ends in an unstressed e, the e is deleted:

  • Deletion of the the e of the linking element:
    When the first noun ends in er (unstressed), the e of the linking element is deleted:

  • Deletion of foreign endings:
    Nouns having plural forms in which the foreign ending (e.g. um, a) is replaced by the plural suffix en, also lose the foreign ending before the linking element en:
