Hyphen

 
 
The hyphen is actually not a wordformation element. It has no formal or semantic function in the formation and the meaning of words. It is an orthographic element used in the spelling of certain complex words.

The hyphen is used: Examples
to show more clearly the structure of complex compounds, or to emphasize single word elements Ich-Erzähler   also: Icherzähler
Druck-Erzeugnis also: Druckerzeugnis
Corned-Beef-Büchse  also: Cornedbeefbüchse 
Midlife-Crisis also: Midlifecrisis

in compounds of coordinate adjectives süß-sauer also: süßsauer
mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlich

to separate sequences of three identical letters in noun compounds; Tee-Ernte also: Teeernte
Schiff-Fahrt also: Schifffahrt
in adjective compounds, the spelling without hyphen is preferred;
Fett-triefend better: fetttriefend
in verb compounds, the hyphen should not be used
only: stilllegen not: still-legen

in compounds containing juxtapositions or word groups Lohn-Preis-Spirale
Pro-Kopf-Verbrauch
das Entweder-oder
Mund-zu-Mund-Beatmung
Coming-out

in complex words containing abbreviations, single letters, or figures UNO-Generalsekretär
